Ring-billed gull

Hunter Farms 3-25-2025

A sure sign of early spring at the farm is large numbers of gulls soaring along our property boundary with Elk Creek. The gulls have learned to take advantage of the thousands of steelhead trout newly stocked by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.

Leaving Winter Behind

Presque Isle State Park 3-7-2025

A Female Common Merganzer flaps her wings as the ice from a long winter finally recedes.

Winter Solstice

Created on December 21st this tree skeleton, along the western fence line at the farm, coveys the feeling of cold and snow during our brief daylight hours this time of year.

Magnolia Plantation

Looking out my farmhouse window at four feet of snow makes it particularly enjoyable remembering this photo from last week. This image was captured at the Magnolia Plantation just outside of Charleston, South Carolina.

Milkweed Pods

Milkweed seed pods a compelling component of nature’s graphic design. They are always an interesting subject for photography.

New England Aster

New England Asters are one of our favorite native flowers. They look particularly beautiful on a rainy day.

Breakfast in the Garden

Praying mantises have always been welcome guests at our organic farm. This image shows why. Although the insect that the mantis is about to devour is beyond the photographic depth of field to be rendered sharply, it is clear enough to see the reason why the mantis is considered a beneficial insect.

Morning Macro

Cooler nights and dewy mornings provide great opportunities for photography here at the farm.

Passing Through

Cedar Waxwing

Like seasonal clockwork a small flock of these handsome birds make an appearance each year at the farm. Near the end of August we watch them dart above the pond for a few evenings chasing insects on the wing. Fun and challenging to photograph in flight.

Monarch Butterfly Caterpillar

Monday, August 12th 2024

As part of our ongoing conservation efforts at Hunter Farms, we were gratified to see the first Monarch Butterfly Caterpillar of 2024 eating a milkweed plant leaf. Over many years we have planted and cultivated milkweed plants to help ensure the survival of this beautiful species.

Sunday at Miller Park

I had an enjoyable day as a presenter at ‘Art in the Park’ at the Chautauqua Institution. My neighboring vendors were very friendly and extremely helpful. I appreciated all the interactions with the event attendees and I’m very much looking forward to next year’s art show.
